The idea of organizing on a map records of indigenous murders in Brazil is to make visible the quantity and consistency with which native peoples were and continue to be massacred. It is a Cartography of Attacks Against Indigenous Peoples (Caci). The word Caci means “pain” in Guarani.

It is the first time that the information has been systematized and georeferenced in a visualization that allows looking at the cases in their territorial dimension. It is the first step in an attempt to mobilize a group of actors to gather, systematize and make visible information on the murders of indigenous people, a topic that does not always receive the attention it deserves. The platform can and should be improved in the coming years.

The project was developed by the Rosa Luxemburgo Foundation, in partnership with Armazém Memória and InfoAmazonia. The georeferencing of the information was based on reports from the Indigenous Missionary Council (CIMI) and the Pastoral Land Commission (CPT) produced between 1985 and 2015, and was done from the region where the crimes took place.

It is not a complete survey. Unfortunately, the number of murders in the period is much higher than those recorded by the two organizations. But it is a solid foundation that, in itself, is a historical record that can serve as a starting point for research and in-depth analysis.

DOSSIER AND ANALYSIS

In addition to georeferencing and making the data available, four dossiers were also organized with in-depth analyzes of emblematic cases. They combine information gathered in historical archives with map data and can be consulted using the word “dossiers” on the top tab. Perhaps the main one is the mass murder of the Guarani Kaiowá people in Mato Grosso do Sul, classified as genocide so serious the situation.

In the last button on the top tab, you can consult the methodology adopted in the survey, learn more about the team involved in this survey and download files with all the data presented in an open and free way or consult them directly from their original sources.
