EIn partnership with Microsoft and Agência Africa, MAM has just been transported into the Minecraft game. At the video game educational version space – aimed at schools and students -, it is possible to visit a replica of the museum, build or rebuild works of art and learn about the history of Brazilian art through playful and virtual activities.

From the start, the experience is already interesting by observing how each element of the museum was translated into the language of Minecraft, one of the most popular video games today, characterized as a kind of digital lego that allows the player to build environments and virtual worlds.

For the partnership with MAM, in addition to recreating the headquarters and the Sculpture Garden of museum, the platform also brings together proposals for classes with thematic clippings from works in its collection; for now, four proposals are already available. In one of them, for example, it is suggested to the educator to take his class for a walk in the Sculpture Garden, making it possible to address issues related to the public's interaction with the work outside the museum, to the nature of the piece (since they are exposed to the open air) and their preservation. After exchanging ideas, students can build their own sculptures and present them to their peers, reflecting on their creation and relating to the questions raised above.

It is also worth noting that, in the educational version of Minecraft, teachers, or another adult responsible for running the game, have control over what players do and can include blocks to limit the area of action on the map, not only demarcating the limits of the territory, but also indicating where players will be able to build or not. Another tool of the game is the blackboard, which will provide guidelines for carrying out activities and information and links to the MAM website about the works of art treated in the class. “The partnership dialogues with MAM's mission to invest in cultural formation, educational and artistic of society”, says Mariana Guarini Berenguer, president of the museum, emphasizing that art is one of the fundamental elements for the construction of citizenship.

For the project's debut, as a way of showing this virtual world, a movie was made inside the game, with the creation of an avatar of Lázaro Ramos, with the actor himself. The filming was under the direction of Rog Souza, from Tropical – MAM’s partner producer on Minecraft – and the photographic documentation of the game was made by Leonardo Sang, creator of the VRP (Virtual Reality Photography) project, which applies photographic techniques to the virtual spaces of the game. match.

First phase of the project

In its first phase, the game will feature works from the MAM-SP collection that formally dialogue with geometric shapes, one of Minecraft's main features.

The clipping emphasizes constructive and geometric art, whether as an unfolding, rupture or reinvention of this style that emerged in Brazil in the 1950s and is part of the history of MAM. In 1952, the museum hosted the launch of the Ruptura Manifesto, headed by some of the biggest names in Brazilian concrete art, such as Geraldo de Barros, Lothar Charoux, Luiz Sacilotto and Waldemar Cordeiro. The movement defended a renewal of the visual arts and the constructive aspect against the latent figuration at the time. The event was a fundamental milestone for Brazilian concrete art and its subsequent “dissent”, neo-concrete art.

For now, the MAM virtual environment in Minecraft will highlight 18 works by contemporary artists who were part of the concrete and neo-concrete movements or who drank from these sources. These are emblematic works by Antônio Lizárraga, Athos Bulcão, Amilcar de Castro, Ary Perez and Denise Milan, Emanoel Araújo, Elisa Bracher, Franz Weissman, Guto Lacaz, Hélio Oiticica, Luiz Sacilotto, Mônica Nador and Renato Imbroisi, Sérgio Sister, Sérgio Camargo and Paulo Pasta.
