Museum of Contemporary Art (MAC) of Curitiba
MAC Paraná extension project

A new museum space is set to open in Curitiba (PR) in 2025, following an unprecedented urban innovation project: the Fábrica de Ideias complex. The setting is the century-old facilities of the former Ambev beer factory, in the Rebouças neighborhood (central area of Curitiba), which has been closed since 2016, and which will house an extension of the Museum of Contemporary Art (MAC) in a bold symbiosis with a gigantic 35 m2 technology and innovation hub (whose investment, announced by Audi do Brasil, is in the order of 300 million reais), a project that is part of the Paraná Competitivo state program.

The Fábrica de Ideias is defined as a hub that will bring together, in addition to technology companies, startups, research centers and government institutions, spaces for business acceleration, creative economy, professional qualification, technological research and coworking. The space also includes a new cultural and gastronomic center, in addition to the MAC museum extension. The future innovation center will also breathe culture, promoting the revitalization of a space that has been unused for years. The extension of the Paraná Museum of Contemporary Art (MAC) will have 6.492,86 m² and will house temporary exhibitions. Opened in 1970, the MAC operates in a building on Cândido Lopes Street, listed as a Historical and Artistic Heritage site of the State. It has 1,8 works by contemporary artists. In 2019, the state government began renovations on the museum's headquarters building, which was in poor condition. Sources reported that a construction company that lost the bid to renovate the building filed a lawsuit and halted the work. The renovation, which was supposed to last 18 months, is still on hold. During this period, the collection was housed at the Oscar Niemeyer Museum (MON), where it is currently located.

The creation of a new cultural facility in the complex, the Museum of Communication and Innovation, with 1.577,36 m², is also being announced. The Factory of Ideas will have an auditorium for 250 people, an integrative square between the spaces that aims to bring art, communication and artificial intelligence closer together, with an area specifically dedicated to technology, according to the project's promotional material.

The architectural project that will allow this integration between different activities and urban actions is by the firm Ricardo Amaral Arquitetos Associados and construction will begin in early 2025. “Every line drawn, every choice of material is a celebration of innovation and the future,” said the project’s architect, Ricardo Amaral. The old factory will be the subject of a retrofit project, with the existing structures being renovated and adapted for the new purposes, in addition to the land being home to new buildings. The old Ambev factory was originally the headquarters of the Gloria and Atlântica breweries, later acquired by Brahma, and is registered as a Preservation Interest Unit (UIP) by the city of Curitiba.

The intervention of the Fábrica de Ideias, with the preservation of the typical industrial landscape of the region, aims to juxtapose past and future in a technological development project. The first stage of the project, which involves the retrofit of the existing space, is scheduled for start as early as early 2025. Retrofit is a technique for revitalizing old buildings, adapting them to current needs. The property, located in the superblock between Getúlio Vargas and Iguaçu avenues, will initially be revitalized (the land has more than 50 thousand square meters in total, with 34 thousand square meters of built area).

The Ricardo Amaral Arquitetos Associados office has been operating in Curitiba since 1976 and also develops projects in other Brazilian states and abroad, with an emphasis on planning, management and supervision of works. Its portfolio includes strategic planning for the development sector, interior architecture, urban, hotel, airport, industrial, commercial, residential and sports projects, always using the best in innovation and technology.

The walls of the Fábrica de Ideias will be painted with images of figures who have left their mark on the history of Paraná, including the brothers André and Antônio Rebouças, who gave their name to the neighborhood and were the engineers responsible for building the railway line connecting Curitiba to the coast; the physicist and scientist from Curitiba César Lattes; and the pioneer of aviation Alberto Santos Dumont, who was one of those responsible for the creation of the Iguaçu National Park. The complex's gastronomic center will be called Alfred Agache, in homage to the architect who created the urbanization plan for Curitiba.
