In 1927, a manifesto addressed "to the intellectuals of Pará" appeared in the pages of the magazine Belém-Nova, a literary publication published in the capital of Pará, in the heart of the Amazon. The text was written by Abguar Bastos Damasceno (1902-1995), a writer and lawyer, and was titled Flami-n'-assú, which means "big flame" in Tupi. The proposals contained in this manifesto had been hatched throughout the 1920s by the group of Amazonian intellectuals of which Abguar was a member, which included figures such as writer and editor Bruno de Menezes (1893-1963), publisher Paulo de Oliveira (who was flogged in 1927 for political reasons), and poet Francisco Galvão (1906-1956), among others.
