Bringing together analyzes from 14 critics and curators from different nationalities, 20 in 2020, the artists of the next decade: Latin America seeks to answer who will define the artistic and cultural horizon in this new decade. With texts in Portuguese, English and Spanish, the book highlights the work of 20 Latin American artists who interact with the continent through their research. For this, it compiles individual analyzes of the production of each one, in addition to presenting their CVs, images of works and views of exhibitions.
20 on 2020 is the result of extensive curatorial research developed by Art Consulting Tool. “The artists presented here give us a comprehensive overview of trends, poetics, places, dynamics, laughter, obsessions, sensibilities, actions, reactions, detachment, attacks… geographic or shared historical, cultural and linguistic affinities”, reflects Gerardo Mosquera in the book's introduction. For the curator, the selected artists show the diversity of contemporary productions in Latin America, going against any type of generalization about the region.
This question guides some of the fundamental questions addressed in the work: what is Latin America? Is it possible to speak of a Latin American artistic voice? Is there an aesthetic and cultural unity for the entire continent? “This book seeks to sustain dissent, highlight the periphery and suggest changing imaginaries. What is clear from our research is the resistance offered by Latin American artists, each with their own poetics and sensibilities, without pamphleting. Resistance against the homogenization and commodification of our souls, rites and myths. Resistance to the shallow framing of old clichés, against any stereotype”, says Fernando Ticoulat, founding partner of Art Consulting Tool
Among critics and curators, the consultancy brought together Brazilians Diane Lima, Germano Dushá, Júlia Rebouças, Kiki Mazzucchelli and Raphael Fonseca; the Cuban Gerardo Mosquera; the Mexicans José Esparza Chong Cuy and Ruth Estévez; Argentines Andrei Fernández and Mariano López Seoane; the Peruvian Miguel A. López; and Americans of Latin descent Nika Chilewich, Olga Viso and Pilar Tompkins Rivas.
The artists, selected as portraits of what is to come in the artistic and cultural world, are Ad Minoliti, Adriano Amaral, Alia Farid, Carolina Caycedo, Dalton Paula, Frieda Toranzo Jaeger, Gabriel Chaile, Gala Porras-Kim, Iván Argote, Jill Mulleady, Johanna Unzueta, Jota Mombasa, Katherinne Fiedler, Naufus Ramírez-Figueiroa, Pia Camil, Reynier Leyva Novo, Sheroanawe Hakihiiwe, Tabita Rezaire, Tania Pérez Córdova and Yuli Yamagata.
