The $6,2 million purchase price at a Sotheby's auction for Comedian (2019) – a banana attached to the wall with adhesive tape designed by Italian Maurizio Cattelan – did not surprise multimedia artist Cildo Meireles (1948). Although the provocative nature is a common denominator in the conceptual art of Cattelan and Meireles, creator of works such as the Coca-Cola bottles with subversive phrases in the series Insertions into ideological circuits (1970), there is a crucial difference between the two artistic gestures.
