Edith Derdyk inaugurated at the Casa de Cultura do Parque, in front of Villa-Lobos Park in São Paulo, the exhibition PROTOBOOK, a collection of old works and new productions.

Written, traced, extended, hung, embroidered, painted, truncated, Edith is obsessed with the “lines” that she conceives and that, over the years, have provided her with the construction of a unique work.

Derdyk likes primary, common materials: thread, bakery machine roll paper, tapestry needles (in this case not so simple, brought from Thailand), which have shaped various works of enormous lightness. In Lung, needles and threads weave a path in the air that, throughout the day, changes course according to the light. It is a space that breathes, in a bright room. The artist always seems to find a way to shelter in the face of shortness of breath.

The exhibition also features the work of a “previous book”, which does not exist, imagined… Cut out, illegible, transformed into sculpture, in pieces, with screws, a non-book, an anterior and posterior, without chronological time, which refers to a never finished book. An infinite and universal book that does not exist and that refers us as a signifier to any other.

“By dismantling books and arranging their fragments in mechanisms without bookish functioning, Edith triggers a fabulatory and visual functioning, singularly subverting the standardized graphic production chain”, curator Fabio Morais writes for the show.

It's worth seeing. The exhibition is on view until October 13 and will still have a course: Horizon lines: writing a landscape, on the 11th, 14th, 18th and 21st of
September.
